LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
I believe that ICRA Project's initiative to expand the course offerings was important in creating the Accademia Mediterranea Mimodramma (the latest milestone in a long journey) in which Michele Monetta and Lina Salvatore asked me to play the dual role of chair and teacher.
On this occasion, I would like to welcome those of you who are about to begin your learning experience at the Accademia Mediterranea Mimodramma, where you will have the opportunity to rigorously verify whether your initial enthusiasm, desire to change and creative curiosity to explore, stem from an authentic vocation for the theatre, tout court, that involves struggle, tenacity, training, exercise, dedication, cruelty, necessity, doubts and a continuous search for Beauty.
I have known Michele and Lina for thirty years, since 1991, when they invited me to the First International Mime Theatre Festival, which they held at the wonderful Charterhouse of Padula, in the heart of Cilento, and dedicated to master teacher Etienne Decroux. We have been working together almost constantly ever since and I have been invited several times to their Neapolitan school.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to present their shows, workshops, conferences and performances within the Drama, Art and Music Studies course curriculum of the University of Bologna, in various projects of Eugenio Barba's Odin Teatret and at prestigious international conferences on training organised in Paris with the University of Quebec, and with the world's leading theatre academies and universities.
Since I first met them, especially as I gradually got to know them better, I was able to appreciate that they had the qualities that few artists possess all at once: creative tension, courage and rigour.
